The Quintet

All-star ensembles have long been a fixture across jazz, yet none achieved quite the stature of this particular Quintet, viewed by many as the finest collection of bop-centered musicians ever united for a single performance. Their landmark appearance was documented at Toronto’s Massey Hall in 1953, with altoist Charlie Parker, trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie, pianist Bud Powell, bassist Charles Mingus, and drummer Max Roach each then regarded as the foremost practitioner of their instrument—though Mingus had filled in for Oscar Pettiford, sidelined by a broken arm sustained in a baseball game. Mingus oversaw both the taping and the initial commercial release of the concert, after which countless reissues and collections of uneven quality continued to surface.
