Drawing primary creative impetus from the psychedelic explorations of the 1960s, the Red Telephone took its moniker from a cut on Love’s landmark Forever Changes album of 1967. Contemporary touchstones such as Wilco, My Bloody Valentine, and Radiohead also shaped the quartet, which united Boston natives singer-guitarist Matt Hutton, guitarist Sean Toohey, bassist Pat MacDonald, and drummer Mark Britton. The band surfaced in 1998 with a self-titled debut issued by Warner Bros., yet the label struggled to position the left-of-center act and soon severed ties without ceremony. Undeterred, the musicians issued the Aviation EP through their independent Raise Giant Frogs label, ultimately moving more units than the major-label release had achieved. Early in 2001 they resurfaced with the full-length follow-up Cellar Songs.
