Originating in informal jam sessions shared among five veterans of roots rock and alternative country, the Resentments eventually coalesced into a functioning band. During the 1970s Stephen Bruton held a steady role in Kris Kristofferson’s band, already embodying the outlaw-country ethos that later became alt-country, back when he still performed under the name Turner Stephen Bruton. Prior to that period he had worked alongside Rita Coolidge, Willie Nelson, T-Bone Burnett, and Billy Joe Shaver, then embarked on a solo career that produced four albums across the 1990s. In 2002 Bruton assembled the Resentments with guitarists and singers Jon Dee Graham and Jud Newcomb, whose own backgrounds proved nearly as substantial. Graham had co-founded roots-rock trailblazers the True Believers, recorded with John Doe and Kelly Willis, and issued three albums that drew widespread critical acclaim. Newcomb had long been entrenched in the Austin music community, performing regularly with Ray Wylie Hubbard and Bob Schneider. Bassist Bruce Hughes and drummer John Chipman—who succeeded John Treaner in 2003—likewise carried sideman credits too extensive to catalog. The group captured its first album, Sunday Night Line Up, in 2002 and soon followed with a self-titled release.
