Biography
Rock quintet the Rockfords traces its roots to four Seattle pre-teens—guitarists Mike McCready and Danny Newcomb, bassist and vocalist Rick Friel, and drummer Chris Friel—who first banded together as Warrior while still in high school in 1978. Lead singer Rob Webber joined the lineup in 1982, prompting a name change to Shadow that endured until the group’s dissolution in 1988. McCready launched Pearl Jam in 1990 and rose to widespread rock prominence, while Newcomb and the Friel brothers stayed active in various local Seattle outfits. Newcomb and Chris Friel established Goodness in 1994 alongside vocalist Carrie Akre; the band issued its self-titled debut in 1995 and followed with Anthem three years later. McCready, still committed to Pearl Jam, reunited with Newcomb, the Friel brothers, and Akre in 1999 to create the Rockfords. The ensemble secured a deal with Epic and delivered its self-titled debut album in February 2000. Although the Epic relationship ended after that single release, the Rockfords persisted and, three years later, issued Live Seattle, WA 12/13/03 on the independent Kufala imprint.
