Biography
The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards carried the official designation of Scotland's senior regiment and the Queen's only regular cavalry. Their Pipes and Drums unit traced its musical origins to the trumpet and kettledrum formations of earlier military guards. An ensemble recognizable as a band first appeared in 1777, yet the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards in their modern configuration arose in 1971 from the merger of the 3rd Carabiniers (the Prince of Wales Dragoon Guards) and the Royal Scots Greys. Their initial pipe-based recording to reach the pop audience arrived in 1972 with the single "Amazing Grace," which topped the charts in the United Kingdom, Ireland, and South Africa. Universal Records issued the group's album Spirit of the Glen in 2007.
