Biography
In 1966 the Rubaiyats issued their lone 45 on Sansu, pairing the Allen Toussaint compositions “Omar Khayyam” and “Tomorrow.” Both tracks are New Orleans soul vocal duets; the former carries an up-tempo Motown flavor while the latter unfolds in a far sultrier mood. Observers have long suspected that the Rubaiyats were in fact Allen Toussaint and Willie Harper, the same pair who recorded a single that same year as Willie & Allen, also for Sansu. Every side from the Rubaiyats’ release, together with both sides of the Willie & Allen single, later appeared on the Sundazed anthology Get Low Down!: The Soul of New Orleans ’65-’67.
