World-renowned for their commercial achievements in the genre, the Sahotas fuse reggae, rock, and dance elements into mesmerizing Indo-Brit grooves. Fronted by vocalist and songwriter Surjit Sahota, the five-brother ensemble secured the number-one position on the Bhangra charts through such hit albums as Sahota Beat in 1988, Brotherhood in 1999, and Teri Meri Gal Ban Gayee in 2000. Their 1993 single “Hass Hogia” stands as the all-time best-selling Bhangra single. The group attained its zenith in 1991, when Ishk held a Top Ten placement for an unprecedented five months, earned the Best Upcoming Band honor at the U.K. Asian Pop Awards, and received the Best Innovative Band award at the Bhangra Music Awards. Bootleg editions of Ishk circulated widely throughout Europe and Africa. Their broadest visibility arrived via a United Kingdom tour on which they served as opening act for British reggae band Aswad. The Sahotas sustained recording and touring activity across the remainder of the ’90s, solidifying their standing as the foremost Bhangra band worldwide. In 2002 they issued Revolution, which drew widespread acclaim.
