Formed as an Italian and Dutch extreme metal group, the Secret fuse black, doom, and death metal into a caustic sound, incorporating punk and hardcore elements for added bitterness. The ensemble balances raw aggression against stretches of cold, atmospheric tension, making their entrance in 2004 via the stark album Luce.

Hailing from Italy’s Trieste area in the northeast, the band originated that same year through the efforts of guitarist Michael Bertoldini and vocalist Marco Coslovich, the only two members to stay throughout its existence. Early on, the Secret honed their craft through relentless live shows and tours, gaining traction by sharing stages with acts such as Dillinger Escape Plan and Chimaira. Their first full-length recording, Luce, appeared on Goodfellow Records toward the end of 2004.

Frequent lineup shifts preceded the 2008 follow-up Disintoxication, which drew notice from the respected U.S. metal imprint Southern Lord. That label put out the band’s third full release, the apocalyptic Solve et Coagula, in 2010. In 2013, three years afterward, Agnus Dei emerged with Bertoldini, Coslovich, bassist Lorenzo Gulminelli, and drummer Tommaso Corte in the lineup. Southern Lord again handled the 2018 EP Lux Tenebris.
