Biography
The Sediment Club deliver a frenzied, jittery strain of punk that channels the raw ethos of 1980s no wave while drawing additional shape from the noise-rock era of the 2000s. Their taut, jagged compositions typically feature complex rhythms, frenetic singing, and stark, oblique words. After coming together in New York toward the close of the 2000s, the band has performed in countless basements and DIY spaces nationwide, frequently appearing alongside like-minded acts such as Guerilla Toss, Palberta, and No Babies.
Austin Julian, who handles vocals and guitar, started the Sediment Club in 2008 while volunteering at the Jersey City freeform station WFMU. With an art-punk foundation and parents who had played in the Bush Tetras and the Voidoids, he possessed broad musical awareness and began creating work that mirrored his wide-ranging tastes. Keyboardist Amina Oliveros and bassist Lazar Bozic formed part of the original lineup, with drummer Jackie McDermott arriving in 2009. That configuration issued a self-titled EP via Soft Spot Records in 2010. After Oliveros departed in 2011, the group carried on as a trio. Their first full-length, Time Decay Now, appeared in 2012, followed the next year by the split LP Kicked Back Into the Crypt alongside Guerilla Toss. NNA Tapes in Vermont put out the EP 30 Seconds Too Late near the close of 2014. A cassette EP titled B Bakery came before the 2015 album Psychosymplastic, the band’s initial outing on Brooklyn’s Wharf Cat Records. Though members now reside in separate states and touring has remained occasional, the group marked its tenth anniversary by issuing the compact twenty-minute LP Stucco Thieves in 2018.
