Rock & roll revivalists the Senders first took shape under vocalist Philippe Marcade, playing the New York City club circuit throughout the late 1970s. Their only release arrived with 1980's Seven Song Super Single, a pub rock-inflected collection that paired 1950s-style originals with covers of early rock & roll and R&B numbers by artists such as Little Richard and Howlin' Wolf. Once the band dissolved, Marcade fronted the R&B combo the Backbones, an outfit that likewise alternated covers with original material. In 1989 three founding members—including Marcade and guitarist Wild Bill Thompson—reconvened with a new bassist to document the live album Do the Sender Thing at CBGB.
