Biography
Originally hailing from Philadelphia, the vocal ensemble first performed as the Cavaliers upon forming in 1954. Dual leads Yvonne Mills Baker and Tommy Wicks anchored the early configuration, which produced a pair of Top 40 R&B singles, the most prominent being the 1956 Atco outing “Please Mr. Disc Jockey.” In 1961 the group revised both its sound and roster, retaining Baker alongside original bass vocalist Alphonso Howell while adding Richard Curtain and Sam Armstrong. Their peak commercial success came the next year with the Argo release “Let Me In,” which rose to number two on the R&B charts and number four pop.
