Formed during the early 1980s in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, the Shady Grove Band operated as a bluegrass quartet that mixed traditional material with newgrass approaches under the direction of singer and guitarist Jerry Brown. Its roster featured singer, songwriter, and bassist Adael Shinn, who grew up in Kannapolis, North Carolina and first played bass alongside Earl Scruggs and John Hartford; mandolinist Charles Pettee, who composed many of the group’s songs; and banjo player Jason Shore. Between 1985 and 1994 the ensemble issued four albums, one of which was The Chapel Hillbilly Way.
