The Shindogs originated in Los Angeles, California, USA, serving as the house band for ABC’s television pop program Shindig!. Their lineup featured Delaney Bramlett on guitar and vocals alongside James Burton on guitar, Joey Cooper on bass, and Chuck Blackwell on drums. They continued appearing regularly on the show right up until its cancellation in 1965. Independently, the band issued their own recordings, with the standout being the 1967 single ‘Who Do You Think You Are’ released through Leon Russell’s Viva Records label. Following the single’s release, the group disbanded shortly thereafter. Burton returned to studio work as a session musician, while Bramlett joined forces with singer Bonnie Lynn O’Farrell—who later became known as Bonnie Bramlett—to form the duo Delaney And Bonnie. Russell lent support to the pair for their 1969 album Accept No Substitute, and subsequently aided Joe Cocker in assembling the touring revue documented on Mad Dogs And Englishmen (1970), a project that also featured Blackwell.
