Blending the sacred steel lineage of gospel with infusions of rock, funk, and blues defines the approach of the Slide Brothers. The quartet’s members—Calvin Cooke, Chuck Campbell, Darick Campbell, and Aubrey Ghent—grew up inside The Church of the Living God, gaining early chances to perform and tour. Although the musicians occasionally shared stages across subsequent decades, they waited until 2012 before issuing their first album. That self-titled debut appeared on the jazz-focused Concord label and was jointly produced by John McDermott and Robert Randolph, the pedal-steel player and leader of the Family Band. Their connection with Randolph generated many additional live dates, several of which ventured into secular repertoire. Among those engagements, the Slide Brothers’ participation in the 2012 Experience Hendrix Tour stood out, as they delivered their own renditions of the Hendrix classics “Purple Haze” and “Foxey Lady.”
