Embodying a clever yet straightforward rock sound that draws from 1960s garage, 1970s punk, and 1980s college rock, the Soft Pack includes vocalist and guitarist Matt Lamkin, guitarist Matty McLoughlin, bassist Dave Lantzman, and drummer Brian Hill. Lamkin and McLoughlin established the group in San Diego during 2008 to address the lack of direct, memorable rock acts in their local scene. Initially performing as the Muslims, they issued a pair of singles in October 2008—Parasites/Walking with Jesus via I Hate Rock n’ Roll and Extinction/My Flash on You through Sweet Tooth Records. Criticism and misunderstanding regarding the original name led them to adopt the Soft Pack instead. March 2009 saw the emergence of their debut single under the new identity, Nightlife/Bright Side, alongside the Muslims EP that compiled earlier material with additional tracks later featured on the Extinction single from May 2009. By then relocated to Los Angeles, the Soft Pack started work on their first full-length record alongside producer Eli Janney. Kemado issued The Soft Pack at the beginning of 2010. Strapped arrived two years afterward, presenting a broader and more restrained collection of material.
