In the fall of 1994, Washington, D.C. post-rock outfit the Sorts came together. Singer/guitarist Joshua LaRue, previously a member of Rain Like the Sound of Trains, joined bassist Stuart Fletcher and ex-Hoover drummer Chris Farrall in the original lineup. Common Time marked their debut album in 1996. This Is Gateway Sounds followed in 1997. Saxophonist Carlo Cennamo of the Boom joined in time for the fourth Sorts LP, 1998’s Hawaiian Bronco. Pianist Vin Novara, an alumnus of the Crownhate Ruin, expanded the group to a five-piece for 1999’s Contemporary Music.
