Biography
Emerging from the vision of Oko Drammeh, the Gambian-born and United States-based world music DJ and festival promoter, the Soto Koto Band fused African rhythms with the sensibilities of contemporary European dance music and the power of big band jazz. A performance was portrayed on www.themusicmagazine.com as one where "a tinkling instrument plays the lead on a track of African drums and leads on to African voices and trumpets in the big band jazz style," while www.taobooks.com asserted that the group's "spectacular percussion and exotic rhythms generate an irresistible urge to dance." The Soto Koto Band partnered with West African vocalist Abdel Kabirr to produce the 1991 album Gumbay Dance, consisting of both songs and instrumentals.
