Biography
Emerging in the 1930s, Style marked the original incarnation of the gospel ensemble known as the Southern Sons. Personnel shifted repeatedly across the ensuing years, yet the music retained its unwavering authenticity and power. Vocalists who contributed included Clifford Givens, James Walker, Bob Holloway, David Smith, and Roscoe Robinson; saxophonists encompassed Sammy Downs, Clarence Hopkins, and Earl Ratliff; guitarists comprised Tim Pruitt and Calvin Hobson; and Robert Claybourne served as organist.
The Southern Sons attained peak popularity throughout the 1950s. Four decades later the group remained active, although the lineup had undergone several additional alterations. Certain members departed for other ensembles, among them the Blind Boys of Mississippi and the Dixie Hummingbirds.
Their recordings present listeners with deep-southern style gospel, featuring such selections as "Live So God Can Use You," "Oh, Lord, I'm in Your Care," "Jesus Is Ready When You Are," "He Answered My Prayers," "I Found the Lord," "Prayer Will Fix It," "The Son Came Out in My Life," and "Whatever You Want From the Lord."
