Despite his youth, Stevie Winwood's intense, soul-infused singing drove the Spencer Davis Group's three biggest American successes during their short run as one of the British Invasion's strongest R&B outfits. Guitarist Davis assembled the lineup with Winwood on organ, Muff Winwood on bass, and Peter York on drums. After teaming with producer Chris Blackwell, the quartet landed its debut hit, the fierce "Keep on Running," from another Blackwell artist, West Indian performer Jackie Edwards. The track topped the British charts in 1965 yet only reached the lower rungs of the U.S. Hot 100. The band's two biggest sellers proved self-written: "Gimme Some Lovin'" and "I'm a Man," both fiery displays of the teenage Winwood's raw vocals and scorching keyboards alongside the group's driving rhythms. Though they scored major chart success across the Atlantic in 1967, the four never built on that momentum with a U.S. tour. At the height of their popularity, Winwood departed to launch Traffic, stripping Davis of his powerful frontman. The guitarist then concentrated on producing other artists, among them the Canadian ensemble the Downchild Blues Band in the early '80s. Spencer Davis died in Los Angeles on October 19, 2020, after developing pneumonia; he was 81.
