Biography
The Sunday Reeds channel the shadowy, echo-drenched noise pop and shoegaze of the late 1980s and early 1990s, in a manner reminiscent of Vivian Girls and Dum Dum Girls, with particular nods to Black Tambourine, the Jesus and Mary Chain, and Joy Division. Romana Ashton, who supplies vocals and bass, and guitarist Drew Jones launched the Melbourne, Australia-based project in 2008, selecting the name in tribute to a noted Australian arts patron. Andy Dawson came aboard on drums the following year to solidify the band’s onstage presence. Their first long-player, Drowning in History, appeared on Squirrel Records in 2009. The record quickly attracted notice and airplay throughout Australia, leading the group to tour both domestically and in the U.K. Two years later, Squirrel Records issued the Dark Rainbows EP, produced by Kramer—whose résumé includes work with Daniel Johnston and Galaxie 500.
