Bands hailing from Britain have long been prone to intense media anticipation well ahead of any debut full-length, and the Suzukis drew immediate attention from the U.K. music press after signing in 2005 to Deltasonic Records, the Liverpool indie home to the Coral and the Zutons, even though their first EP, Reducer, did not surface until 2007. While the group’s northwest England base of Wigan earned lasting recognition for sparking the retro Northern soul movement during the 1970s, the Suzukis instead echo the lineage of Oasis and the Libertines through a raw, guitar-driven blend of rock & roll bravado and old-school punk theatrics. Formed in early 2003 while still teenagers, singer Chris Veasey, guitarist Adam Bamford, bassist Robert Warnes, and drummer Stuart Robinson caught the attention of Deltasonic founder Alan Wills—onetime drummer for the ’90s cult band Shack—at a gathering hosted by a shared acquaintance. Following their 2005 signing, the quartet spent nearly two years refining material and tightening live performances before Reducer finally appeared in summer 2007.
