Biography
Merging the Fall's abrasive edge with melodic turns that occasionally jangle, Australian post-punk outfit the Toads shape a sound at once unsettled and magnetic. Its members, drawn from separate corners of Melbourne's D.I.Y. network, coalesced quickly enough to stockpile material for their first full-length, the 2023 release In the Wilderness.
The quartet took shape in 2021 when guitarist Billy Gardner, after losing his home to fire, lodged with Parsnip's Stella Rennex; together with the Shifters' Miles Jansen handling vocals and Elsie Retter on drums, the musicians locked into place as the Toads. Shows and songwriting followed through 2022. What began as sessions for a 7" of their twitchy, tuneful lo-fi punk soon overflowed the format, then surpassed an EP's scope, prompting the decision to issue everything as the debut album In the Wilderness on Upset the Rhythm that June.
