Greensboro, North Carolina witnessed the rise of multiple strong acts spanning several styles from 2002 to 2004, among them the Tremors. Much like other U.S. cities, live music had nearly disappeared there throughout the late 1990s. When shows resumed at both established and newer locations, a revival atmosphere emerged, though that description sits oddly with a group whose repertoire features “Pill Popper” and “Riot.” Appearances at New York Pizza, The Green Bean, and Ace’s Basement supplied bands like the Tremors with the equivalent of dependable guitar cables, finally letting audiences hear the music. Attendance would improve if more listeners agreed to pay cover charges.

Those reluctant to spend might instead be setting money aside for recordings, which could help the band’s 2004 debut album, The Scourge of the South, reach surviving southern households after hurricane season. Performing under pseudonyms, the Tremors feature frontman Jimmy Tremor on guitar and vocals, with Slim Perkins on bass and Stretch Armstrong on drums. Tremor had previously played in the rockabilly outfit Ubangi Stomp, unrelated to the Washington, D.C. band called the Ubangis. Details about the Tremors are available at the Hypnotica shop on Spring Garden Street, where Perkins often works behind the counter.
