Biography
The Trillions hail from Richmond, Virginia, and identify their sound as “shred pop.” After Prabir & the Substitutes disbanded in 2009, three alumni from that power pop group—bassist Robbie King, guitarist Chris Smith, and guitarist/vocalist Charlie Glenn—joined forces with local drummer Joe Ferguson, formerly of the Awesome Few. The resulting quartet forged a hybrid style that honored earlier eras while nodding to contemporary influences, keeping the layered vocal harmonies once central to the Substitutes while incorporating denser textures drawn from indie rock, punk, and 8-bit music. Taking cues from Gustav Holtz and Ludwig van Beethoven, the band sometimes split its chords into single-note lines distributed across separate instruments.
By March 2010 the Trillions were performing in Richmond and additional cities along the East Coast. Charlie Glenn also served as touring guitarist and keyboardist with Thao with the Get Down Stay Down, and acts such as Best Coast, Girl Talk, and J Roddy Walston & the Business periodically booked the Trillions as support. Later in 2010 the group issued its self-released EP Flux and began work on a debut full-length that arrived in 2012.
