Biography
Ryan Hibbett, handling vocals along with guitar and drum machine, joined Jeremy Beiermann, who supplied vocals, bass, and samples, after both had spent years repeatedly playing their copies of Sebadoh, Palace, and Pavement albums to the point of exhaustion. Retrieving a long-unused four-track, the pair formed Turtleneck in 1998 and pursued a lo-fi style that combined melodic, poppy hooks with poetic lyrics. They tracked two demos they would later describe as "a learning experience" and, still in 1998, issued a split EP alongside Millawake's Afo Zankey Band, after which Springfield, IL, has never been the same.
