Biography
As an acid house vehicle tied to the Rephlex imprint, which draws praise from techno enthusiasts, Universal Indicator emerged when numerous Chicago house originators faded from view after trance and progressive styles became the dominant commercial route for DJs and producers. The project also drew impetus from respected U.K. figures including Baby Ford, A Guy Called Gerald, and 808 State. Rather than chase prominent guest names or slick packaging and song titles, the participants aimed to craft music they would personally want to own. While the full roster remains only partially identified, Richard James and Mike Dred both contributed; James recorded as Martin Tressider and Dred as Kosmik Commando. The collective issued four highly limited 12"s titled after the colors red, yellow, blue, and green, with Dred handling Blue and Yellow and James responsible for Red and Green. In 2001 Rephlex released the Dred-mixed full-length CD Innovation in the Dynamics of Acid.
