Prior to embarking on a solo path in 2012, Charlie Boyer had performed in several groups, most prominently the folk-leaning Electricity in Our Homes. That year he issued the standalone single “Ducks”/“You Haven’t Got a Chance” on Blank Editions and assembled a band—Sam Davies, Samir Eskanda, Danny Stead, and Ross Kristian—to pursue his concept of Tom Verlaine fronting a psychedelic Velvet Underground. After the new ensemble supported Heavenly Recordings act TOY, label head Jeff Barrett invited them to record. The resulting track “I Watch You,” cut with producers Edwyn Collins and Seb Lewsley at West Heath Studios, appeared in September 2012. Heavenly then commissioned a full album, prompting another session with the same production team that yielded Clarietta, issued on the label in May 2013. Following extensive refinement of new material and a streamlined name change to the Voyeurs, the group delivered Rhubarb Rhubarb in late 2014.
