Biography
Manchester-based dance-rock outfit the Whip toiled for several years in the indie electronic underground prior to unveiling their first full-length effort, X Marks Destination, in 2008 under the guidance of producer Jim Abbiss. Anchored by Danny Saville and Bruce Carter, the lineup also incorporates Lil Fee and Nathan Sudders. The group first surfaced in 2006 via the 7" single Frustration on British imprint Kids and the 12" single Trash on Lavolta Records. Kitsuné Music subsequently included the latter track on Kitsuné Maison, Vol. 3, sparking early overseas attention. In 2007 the Whip issued Divebomb as a Kitsuné 12" featuring a Crystal Castles remix on the B-side, with the cut also appearing on Kitsuné Maison, Vol. 4. That same year the band supplied remixes for Editors' "An End Has a Start," Paul Hartnoll's "Please" featuring Robert Smith, and Asobi Seksu's "Strawberries," then aligned with Norman Cook's (aka Fatboy Slim) Southern Fried Records for the singles "Muzzle No. 1" and "Sister Siam." Shortly afterward they tracked their 2008 debut album X Marks Destination alongside Jim Abbiss, whose prior credits encompass Editors' The Back Room (2005) and Arctic Monkeys' Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not (2006). A brief January/February 2008 UK support run with Simian Mobile Disco helped build momentum, reinforced by a "Trash" video and an extensive slate of live shows that encompassed a South by Southwest appearance in Austin, TX.
