Biography
WINNER, a South Korean boy band, specializes in pop shaped by dance grooves, rap passages, and R&B textures. Their first album, “2014 S/S”, launched them with immediate dominance, reaching the summit of both the Gaon and Billboard World album charts. Subsequent releases kept them at the forefront in Korea, where EPs such as 2016’s Exit: E and 2019’s We also claimed the top slot. The group scored additional number-one singles with “Empty,” “REALLY REALLY,” and “EVERYDAY,” the last serving as the flagship track for their second studio album, 2018’s Everyd4y. That year they issued the Japanese full-length “OUR TWENTY FOUR”, which entered the Top Five, followed in 2020 by “Remember”, which reached the Top Ten, and in July 2022 by the EP “HOLIDAY”.
The ensemble formed in 2013 after prevailing on the YG Entertainment reality competition Who Is Next: WIN. Its original members were vocalist/dancers Lee Seunghoon (aka Hoony), former Superstar K2 contestant Kang Seung-yoon (aka Seungyoon or Yoon), Song Minho (aka Mino), Kim Jin-woo (aka Jinwoo), and Nam Tae-hyun (aka Taehyun). Victory on the program earned them their own ten-episode series, WINNER TV. When the show concluded in 2014, the band released its debut full-length, “2014 S/S”, containing the singles “Empty” and “Color Ring”; the album topped the Gaon chart and also led Billboard’s Top World Albums tally. Exit: E repeated the number-one achievement on the South Korean album ranking in 2016, the same year Taehyun departed to concentrate on solo material and launch South Club.
Following a brief pause, WINNER continued as a quartet and returned in 2018 with Everyd4y, which debuted at number one domestically. They simultaneously delivered their first Japanese studio album, “Our Twenty Four”, spotlighting the singles “Love Me Love Me” and “Island.” Both the We and Cross EPs topped the Korean charts the following year. In 2020 the group unveiled its third full-length, “Remember”, featuring several tracks penned by Mino including “Hold” and the title song; the set peaked at number three on the Gaon Album chart. The EP “HOLIDAY” surfaced in July 2022.
