British punk quartet the Yo-Yo's came together in 1998 when singer/bassist Danny McCormack launched the project after leaving metal outfit the Wildhearts. During a backing-vocal session for his idols Toy Dolls, McCormack enlisted ex-Sugar Snatch vocalist/guitarist Tom Spencer; once drummer Bladder joined the lineup, the three began searching for a lead guitarist and ultimately chose Neil Phillips of the B Movie Heroes. The band's debut single, "(You Got Me) Out of My Mind," surfaced on the Rebound label in late 1998, with "Rumble(d)" following the subsequent year; after inking a deal with Sub Pop, the group delivered its first album, Uppers and Downers, in mid-'00.
