Biography
In 2005 Austin, Texas-based vocalist and guitarist Hans Zimmerman first formed The Young. The project remained a solitary home-recording endeavor until roughly 2007, when bassist Jason Costanzo, guitarist Kyle Edwards, and drummer Ryan Maloney joined, transforming it into a complete punk quartet. Early singles issued on Criminal IQ and Super Secret, together with a track on Matador Records’ 2010 anthology Casual Victim Pile, captured the group in a raw, punk-driven mode. Their first album-length statement, Voyagers of Legend, appeared on Mexican Summer in 2010 and marked an abrupt pivot toward dense, guitar-centric psychedelic rock. Widespread critical praise followed, prompting expanded touring alongside peers such as Sic Alps, Kurt Vile, and Lower Dens. Impressed by the band’s stage presence and studio precision, Matador signed The Young, resulting in the 2012 release Dub Egg. After Costanzo departed, Lucas Wedow assumed bass duties for the sessions that produced 2014’s Chrome Cactus, an album that embraced bleaker themes and more incisive arrangements.
