Biography
Guitarist Thibaut Garcia first drew notice through his inventive approach to recital programming and his distinctive technical command, qualities often traced to his mixed French and Spanish roots. His profile quickly expanded through an array of international engagements, most prominently an extended series of North American dates.
Born in Toulouse on May 26, 1994, to one French and one Spanish parent, Garcia began playing the guitar at age seven and collected early competition successes while still a child. At sixteen he entered the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris, where his teachers were Olivier Chassain and Judicaël Perroy. During his initial year at the conservatory he captured first prize in the Ana Amalia competition held in Weimar, Germany, and he went on to repeat such achievements by taking top honors at the International Competition of Seville in 2013, the Petrer Guitar Competition in 2014, and the Guitar Foundation of America Competition in Oklahoma City in 2015. He has since returned to several of these events as a jury member and master-class instructor.
His first commercial recording, the recital disc Demain dès l'aube, appeared on the Contrastes label in 2015. The Oklahoma City victory opened further North American opportunities, resulting in a sixty-concert tour across the continent in 2016 and 2017. Additional travels took him to Brazil, Chile, Mexico, and Argentina—territories not easily accessible to visiting guitarists—as well as to Australia and the French overseas territory of New Caledonia.
Within Europe he has performed regularly in Italy, Germany, Belgium, and numerous other countries, while remaining a recognized presence in France through frequent national-television appearances. He has also performed concertos with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and several French ensembles. His engaging stage manner and established audience following led Warner Classics to sign him to its Erato imprint. The association produced the album Leyendas in 2016 and, two years later, Bach Inspirations, a survey of guitar works from different periods that reflect Bach’s influence. Aranjuez followed in 2020, and in 2021 Garcia released À sa guitare, a collaboration with countertenor Philippe Jaroussky. His schedule for late 2021 and 2022 encompassed numerous French venues, a London engagement, and a visit to the French island of Réunion in the Indian Ocean.
