This Beautiful Mess, a quintet hailing from the Netherlands, fuses orchestral textures and shoegazing rock with the otherworldly elegance associated with 4AD acts such as Cocteau Twins, all while channeling the emotionally charged intensity of Radiohead. Its lineup features vocalist Arjen Van Wijk, guitarist Joop Flamman, bassist Abne Herrebout, drummer Axel Kabboord, and multi-instrumentalist Lydia Wever, whose contributions on vocals, keyboard, and string machine enrich the ensemble’s sweeping, film-like soundscape.

The group’s inaugural release, Falling on Deaf Ears, drew from British shoegazer pop, the atmospheric sensibilities of Midwestern American emocore, and electronica to shape a thoughtfully assembled debut whose introspective, longing lyrics float over dense, mesmerizing instrumental layers. Minco Eggersman and Rene de Vries handled production duties, with Martin Groeneveld capturing the sessions at Mailmen Studios in Utrecht, Holland. The band signed with the U.S. independent imprint Deep Elm, which issued Falling on Deaf Ears in 2001.
