Thomas Fonnesbaek

Danish jazz bassist Thomas Fonnesbæk has built a reputation as both a bandleader and a sought-after sideman through his fusion of contemporary jazz with expressive European and Scandinavian influences. Since the 2000s he has directed his own trio, documented on the 2013 release Sound of My Colors and the 2015 album Where We Belong. Additional partnerships include pianist Justin Kauflin and vocalist Sinne Eeg, yielding the duo projects Eeg-Fonnesbæk in 2015 and Staying in Touch in 2022, while further significant work with pianist Enrico Pieranunzi produced Blue Waltz in 2018 and In Rome in 2024.

Born in Helsingør, Denmark, in 1977, Fonnesbæk began playing bass at age twelve and soon pursued studies in jazz and improvisation during his teenage years. Early influences encompassed Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen and Jacob Christoffersen, alongside an eclectic listening diet that ranged from acoustic jazz to funk and soul. Regular performances throughout the 2000s placed him alongside both local musicians and visiting international artists. His first outing as a leader arrived in 2013 with Sound of My Colors, recorded by the trio featuring pianist Lars Jansson and drummer Paul Svanberg; a second trio session, Where We Belong, followed in 2015. Over time he has also appeared with Monty Alexander, Aaron Parks, Kristian Jørgensen, Mona Larsen, Thomas Clausen, Heine Hansen, and others.

The 2015 duo recording Eeg-Fonnesbæk marked his initial collaboration with Danish vocalist Sinne Eeg. Subsequent projects with pianist Justin Kauflin included the 2017 album Synesthesia and the 2018 set Sharing, the latter also featuring drummer Billy Williams. Wider recognition came with the 2018 release Blue Waltz, a joint effort alongside pianist Enrico Pieranunzi. Fonnesbæk rejoined Kauflin for the 2020 collection Standards.

In 2021 he received the Ben Webster Prize, awarded to Danish and American musicians. The following year brought another pairing with vocalist Eeg on Staying in Touch. Danish Rain, issued in 2023, showcased the lyrical Scandinavian jazz approach through further work with pianist Kauflin. The refined small-group session In Rome appeared in 2024, once more uniting the bassist with longtime associate Pieranunzi along with saxophonist Rosario Giuliani, vocalist Valentina Ranalli, and drummer Roberto Gatto.
