Biography
Thomas Morgan is an American jazz bassist whose extensive body of work showcases both breadth and depth. Although he seldom appears alone and has issued no recordings under his own name, he has contributed to projects led by John Abercrombie, Tomasz Stanko, David Binney, Paul Motian, and Masabumi Kikuchi, among many others. Guitarist Bill Frisell has been a regular partner; the guitarist’s clean, atmospheric approach pairs naturally with Morgan’s rich tone and his steady yet inventive rhythmic sense, and these shared endeavors did much to increase the bassist’s visibility.
Born in Haymarket, California, Morgan began cello lessons at age seven. He turned to bass while in high school and later earned a Bachelor’s degree from the Manhattan School of Music, where he became fully immersed in New York City’s jazz community. His first appearance on record came in 2002 with Down Homeless on PG Records, credited to the quartet VNMG alongside Will Vinson, Peter Gabis, and Steve Newcombe. The group played frequently around the city while Morgan simultaneously built other associations, earning recognition for his clean, woody tone, fluid improvisational ability, and canny timekeeping; these qualities allowed him to move comfortably among varied settings and leaders.
The 2006 album Cities and Desire marked his first notable exposure, as a member of Binney’s ensemble with Mark Turner, Craig Taborn, and Dan Weiss—musicians with whom he would continue to work in multiple contexts. In 2007 he recorded That/Not, his initial date with Tyshawn Sorey, and in 2008 he joined the Samuel Blaser Quartet, establishing ongoing relationships with both musicians. That year also placed him in Abercrombie’s quartet, resulting in his ECM debut as a sideman on Wait 'til You See Her. Four further recordings appeared in 2010 under the leadership of Sorey, Dan Weiss, the Sylvie Courvoisier-Mark Feldman Quartet, and Scott DuBois. The following year brought additional work with Blaser, Sorey, and Courvoisier & Feldman, plus his first recording with the Jim Black Trio, a group he has continued to serve. He also joined Paul Motian’s trio with Bill Frisell for The Windmills of Your Mind, the drummer’s final album before his death.
During the next two years Morgan deepened his ECM association through Stanko’s seminal Wislawa and through trio sessions with Kikuchi, Taborn, and pianist Giovanni Guidi. In 2014 he rejoined Courvoisier-Feldman for Birdies for Lulu on Intakt Records and Black’s trio for Actuality on Winter & Winter, touring with both ensembles. The year 2015 found him on Blaser’s Spring Rain for Whirlwind Recordings and on a collaborative date with Kikuchi—his last group recording before his passing—alongside Ben Street and Kresten Osgood; ECM releases that year included Jakob Bro’s Gefion and Guidi’s This Is the Day. Streams by Bro and The Constant by Black appeared in 2016, the same year Morgan and Frisell recorded a live duo album for ECM at New York’s Village Vanguard. Small Town followed in 2017 and was supported by a North American tour. Subsequent Village Vanguard performances with Frisell were documented on the 2019 release Epistrophy, which presented jazz and pop standards, movie themes, and compositions drawn from Paul Motian’s songbook.
