During their formative years in Norwell, MA, Matt and Andrew Thompson gravitated toward the sounds of Dwight Yoakam and Steve Earle. Even though country music held little appeal for most of their friends across the Northeast, Mike Whitty signed on with the band the brothers had launched in the early '90s. After honing their material across the Massachusetts region for several years, the three musicians headed to Nashville, where they landed a contract with RCA almost immediately. The Thompson Brothers issued their debut recording, the 1996 EP Cows on Main Street, before delivering the full-length album Blame It on the Dog in 1998.
