Biography
Dave Shouse of the Grifters first envisioned Those Bastard Souls as a side endeavor that came together in 1996 upon the appearance of Twentieth Century Chemical. Though that release amounted to little more than a solo undertaking by Shouse, an invitation from Sebadoh to join their tour led him to recruit the Dambuilders’ Joan Wasser and Matt Fields, onetime bassist with Red Red Meat, so the group could perform live. After the Dambuilders dissolved and the Grifters entered hiatus, Those Bastard Souls matured into a permanent band. The founding trio then brought in drummer Kevin March, another ex-Dambuilder, and Michael Tighe, formerly guitarist for Jeff Buckley, to complete the lineup that recorded the band’s V2 debut, Debt & Departure, in 1999.
