Biography
Throne of Katarsis came together in Norway during 2003, driven by a straightforward goal of delivering the icy, severe black metal sound rooted in the classic 1990s approach. The core duo consists of Vardalv handling drums and Grimnisse—also known as Thor Erik Helgesen—managing vocals along with every studio instrument, while bassist Lord Imalas and guitarist Godhate complete the configuration used for concerts. Although the group adheres to black metal’s characteristic chainsaw-like riffs, relentless droning blastbeats, and hoarse, croaking vocals, it incorporates generous amounts of acoustic guitar to deepen its textures. On the lyrical side, the band draws from the sacrilegious motifs standard to the style, taking further cues from the stark natural landscapes of its native country.
The group’s first recording, the demo Unholy Holocaustwinds, appeared in March 2004 after being tracked across three days using a simple four-track cassette machine. Initially pressed in a run of just 40 copies, the demo gained enough interest to prompt reissues on cassette and vinyl through the German label Warfront Productions and on CD via the English imprint Paradigms Recordings; its closing piece notably featured field recordings capturing Grimnisse’s steps through a snow-covered woodland. Later the same year the band completed a follow-up demo titled Blodslakt, yet this material remained unreleased in standalone form because its songs were instead placed on the debut album An Eternal Dark Horizon, issued by Candlelight Records in 2007. That October Throne of Katarsis made its initial performance beyond Norwegian borders, appearing in Waltershausen, Germany.
