Biography
Originating in Brattleboro, Vermont, Thus Love channels themes of struggle, affirmation, and unity through a lean post-punk approach. Their 2022 debut album Memorial wove together noisy experimentalism, glam, jazz, and classical touches, whereas 2024’s All Pleasure brought added swagger and sensuality to the group’s palette.
Three self-identifying trans artists launched Thus Love in 2018 when multi-instrumentalists Echo Mars (they/them) and Lu Racine (he/they) first linked up in Brattleboro and started writing together. Keyboardist Nathaniel van Osdol (they/them) came aboard the next year, and the trio bonded over parallel experiences of growing up in rural Vermont while searching for community. They carved out space within the town’s liberal, artist-friendly milieu, constructed their own studio, and merged jazz and classical training with wider inspirations that included Solange, Justin Bieber, Grace Jones, and Pond. Beginning from a stripped-down guitar-bass-drums foundation, the band shaped a sound that references ’80s post-punk while branching in numerous directions. When the COVID-19 global pandemic suspended live performances, Thus Love kept refining their material and recordings. After cultivating a regional following, they signed with Brooklyn indie Captured Tracks, which issued the debut single “Inamorato” ahead of the full-length Memorial in October 2022.
Once Memorial appeared, Thus Love toured alongside Wild Nothing, Working Mens Club, and Dry Cleaning while developing their sophomore record. With bassist Ally Julien (she/they) and guitarist/keyboardist Shane Blank (he/him) now in the lineup, November 2024’s All Pleasure highlighted the sensuality and glam-rock roots already present in their work.
