Biography
Originating from Senegal, Tidiane Thiam works across several disciplines as a guitarist, folklorist, photographer, and artist, recognized for a calm technique that recasts longstanding Sahelian folk traditions through the lens of present-day Western guitar. His joint effort with hoddu player Amadou Binta Konté produced the 2017 album Waande Kadde, after which he issued his first solo recording, the all-instrumental Siftorde, in 2020.
Thiam grew up in Podor, a modest riverside settlement that marks Senegal’s northernmost community along the border with Mauritania. Guitar skills came to him through self-directed listening, as he isolated melodies from late-night radio signals. Over time he developed into a knowledgeable student of Sahelian folk practices, drawing directly from that heritage to shape his own reflective fingerstyle work, frequently created in the moment. Regional music often centers on the hoddu, the four-stringed ngoni widely played in Senegal, leading Thiam to join forces in 2017 with local fisherman and hoddu performer Amadou Binta Konté for a set of instrumental duets titled Waande Kadde. The recording reached international audiences through the Sahel Sounds label, an outlet devoted to circulating music from the area worldwide. Three years afterward he completed a project consisting solely of his own guitar performances. Issued once more by Sahel Sounds in 2020, Siftorde was captured live through a single microphone across one night.
