Biography
Tiffany Anders traded her role as nanny to celebrities for her own ascent into the spotlight. Her background offered a notable advantage, as her mother is Allison Anders, the filmmaker behind Gas, Food, Lodging. Another key asset came when PJ Harvey stepped in to produce one of her records. The artist launched her recording career in 1998 with the Up Records release Running From No Place to Nowhere. Two years later she returned with the follow-up Funny Cry Happy Gift, again issued by Up. Her introduction to Harvey occurred after she handed the musician a demo tape on a New York sidewalk. Harvey responded by appearing at several early performances by the emerging singer-songwriter. Their connection deepened, and Harvey eventually extended an offer of support should Anders need it. When Anders later requested production help on the album, Harvey revealed she had already considered the same idea yet hesitated to impose herself by asking first. The pair convened in Hoboken, New Jersey, and completed tracking for Funny Cry Happy Gift within a matter of weeks. Beyond her production duties, Harvey also contributed instrumental and vocal performances throughout the sessions. Anders attributes the initial encounter with Harvey to her mother, who likewise facilitated introductions to J Mascis and Mike Johnson of Dinosaur Jr. and immersed her in music from an early age. Together mother and daughter frequented punk shows in Los Angeles by Redd Kross, X, and similar acts. Even prior to adolescence, Anders accompanied her mother to concerts that included a performance by Exene. She was also introduced to 1960s pop and other styles during this period. By age 14 the songwriter had acquired a guitar, though she did not grow at ease with the instrument until turning 18, when she began practicing with a Neil Young songbook. She participated in a pair of Seattle bands before relocating to New York to pursue a solo path. Ahead of establishing herself independently, Anders contributed vocals to Dinosaur Jr.’s 1997 album Hand It Over and collaborated with both Mascis and Johnson.
