Biography
Tim Barnes played a multifaceted role as an expansive experimental percussionist who also worked as a producer and engineer, maintaining ties to the downtown New York avant-jazz scene while lending his skills to various indie rock endeavors. He further shaped the landscape as proprietor of the Quakebasket label, which issued limited-edition and wider releases by contemporary experimenters alongside meticulous reissues. In addition, his regular employment forged connections between indie rock circles and music licensing for advertising purposes.
Barnes first surfaced in the late 1990s through contributions to indie rock mainstays such as the Silver Jews and the Elephant 6-affiliated Essex Green, alongside pop-leaning avant-garde fixture Jim O'Rourke. He discovered common ground with fellow O'Rourke associate drummer Glenn Kotche, and the pair performed tandem drums on O'Rourke's Halfway to a Threeway as well as his landmark Insignificance. Much like Kotche, who subsequently joined Wilco, Barnes approached the drum kit as a melodic instrument, incorporating textures drawn from an instinctive command of his equipment's sonic properties, a method evident on his rigorously acoustic solo debut All Acoustics.
He appeared regularly on recordings by New England hippie noise guitarist Matt Valentine, encompassing projects with Tower Recordings and MV & EE. Barnes also maintained a peripheral presence in Sonic Youth's orbit, participating in their deeply psychedelic Koncertas Stan Brakhage Prisiminimui and serving occasionally with Lee Ranaldo in Text of Light.
Launched in 1999 specifically to reissue two albums by founding Velvet Underground drummer and noted drone practitioner Angus MacLise, the Quakebasket imprint provided an outlet for Barnes himself along with other drummers, including multiple collaborations with Kotche, who reciprocated by including Barnes in the 2004 Wilco sessions for Ghost Is Born.
Across his career Barnes sustained positions as a commercial sound designer and selector of music for advertisements, resulting in placements that matched avant-garde and indie artists such as Apples in Stereo, the Sea and Cake, German experimenters Faust, and free jazz drummer and educator Milford Graves.
