Tim Dawe, born Jerry Penrod, stood on the edge of major recognition with his signature track “Junkie John.” The psychedelic folk-rock number began receiving airplay, yet the FCC’s tightening restrictions on drug-themed material halted its momentum and left the single unplayed on most stations, after which Dawe slipped rapidly from view. An original Iron Butterfly member, he was represented by Herb Greene, the same manager who guided Frank Zappa’s career. His first album, Penrod, appeared on Zappa’s Straight-Warner Bros. imprint in November 1969; Jerry Yester, formerly of the Lovin’ Spoonful, handled production while Zappa served as executive producer. Dawe maintained an extended association with the San Francisco ensemble It’s a Beautiful Day, which included his composition “Places of Dreams and Wine” on the 1991 release Choice Quality Stuff/Anytime. Former It’s a Beautiful Day bassist Mitchell Holman later produced Dawe’s 1976 comeback effort, Timothy and Ms. Pickens with Natural Act. In addition, Dawe assembled the 1979 multi-artist collection A Night at the Wine Cellar, documenting live folk and blues performances.
