Born Tim Shaw in 1978, English producer Tim Exile first entered electronic music as a DJ. Discovering synthesizers and tape machines prompted him to acquire a sampler, after which he started crafting demanding drum'n'bass for Beta Recordings, Moving Shadow, and additional imprints. Between 2000 and 2004 he put out around a dozen 12" singles, EPs, and double packs. Although drum'n'bass ingredients persisted in his work, the textures grew steadily more abstract while retaining the breakneck momentum of his initial recordings. Beginning with the 2005 Planet Mu album Pro Agonist, he shifted toward a pattern of full-length releases, even as he continued to issue stray 12"s; this phase yielded the wildly hyper and splintered Tim Exile's Nuisance Gabbaret Lounge (Planet Mu, 2006) and the voice-centric Listening Tree (Warp, 2009).
