Emerging in the 1990s as one of New Orleans’s most promising clarinetists, Tim Laughlin quickly established himself within the trad jazz community. He first took up the instrument at age nine, and aside from occasional alto saxophone work during high school, he remained devoted to clarinet for the rest of his professional life, citing Pete Fountain as his primary inspiration. Throughout the late ’90s he secured multiple bookings across Europe, most prominently in Germany, while also becoming a fixture on the New Orleans jazz circuit, including an extended tenure with the Dukes of Dixieland. For Good Time Jazz and Jazzology he led several sessions, two of which paired him in spirited exchanges with fellow clarinetists Jack Maheu and Tom Fischer.
