Some producers become linked for life with one particular performer, while others, such as Minneapolis-based Tim Mac, instead define themselves through an entire local movement. In his instance that movement centers on the guitar-driven, post-punk outfits that cut records for the Minneapolis-based Amphetamine Reptile imprint. Himself a participant in Halo of Flies, Mac developed his production résumé through ties with fellow area players and through the affordability of his services. Working largely straight to tape on a Tascam 8-track, his economical, unadorned approach with groups like the Cows and Green Day supplied the foundation for countless indie acts’ debut 7-inches and marketable demos. After Babes In Toyland secured a major-label deal in 1992, Mac followed the group, assisting producer Lee Renaldo during sessions and serving as the band’s live soundman on the road. Back in his cherished Minneapolis, he has kept documenting Amphetamine Reptile’s lineup of aggressive underground acts, among them Janitor Joe and the Cows.
