Brooklyn, NY native Tim Williams favors introspective lyrics, playful arrangements, and clever pop melodies, placing him alongside fellow indie singer-songwriters Josh Rouse and Ben Kweller. He first surfaced on the local scene in the early 2000s; after issuing his initial independent release, Tales of Digression, he secured a CMJ Music Marathon showcase in 2004. Producer David Lynch attended the performance, responded favorably to the material, and subsequently invited Williams to Eastbourne, England, where the two cut new songs that became the 2006 EP The Merchant Heart. Energized by the sessions with the U.K. producer, Williams headed home and began preparing his Dovecote Records debut, laying down close to one hundred demos on his home computer over several months. Shortly before pre-production, the computer was stolen, compelling him to reconstruct roughly fifty of the tracks from memory using a four-track recorder. The resulting album, When Work Is Done, appeared on Dovecote in 2007.
