From their beginnings as Prince's inaugural side venture through their independent funk-rock catalog, the Time stood out as a bold and irreverent ensemble. Lead singer Morris Day poured his brash, strutting charisma into club tracks capable of rivaling the energy of Rufus Thomas, while the group distinguished itself from peers by forging an original path amid Prince's boundary-shattering experiments. After a temporary split in the late '80s, Day pursued solo work, Jesse Johnson delivered two striking individual releases, and Jimmy Jam with Terry Lewis rose to prominence as producers rivaling the stature of Gamble & Huff through collaborations spanning Full Force, Janet Jackson, the S.O.S. Band, and Human League. The collective reconvened in 1990 to issue the acclaimed Pandemonium, which reached the U.S. Top 20. Although members focused on separate projects for much of the '90s, nearly all of them rejoined in the early 2010s under the name Original 7ven to unveil Condensate in 2011.
