Biography
The Serpent Power, a minor late-'60s psychedelic outfit from the San Francisco Bay Area, drew its chief creative impetus from singer Tina Meltzer and her husband, the poet/singer/songwriter David Meltzer, who together delivered the group’s lone album for Vanguard Records. During 1969 the pair independently recorded Poet Song for the same label, merging David Meltzer’s spoken poems with gentle, bittersweet psychedelic-tinged folk-rock tunes usually sung by Tina Meltzer. Although not a major find, the album holds its own appeal and comes across as more assured, and less derivative, than the folk-rock-psychedelic material penned by David Meltzer for the Serpent Power LP. The once-rare Poet Song LP later appeared as a single-disc CD reissue on Akarma Records, which also contained the Serpent Power’s self-titled album. Faces, another Tina & David Meltzer release, surfaced in 1984 on Folkways.
