Biography
Tino Derado, a pianist and accordionist, blends his jazz roots with a deep fascination for ethnic and world music traditions. He began exploring music at age six through classical piano lessons, later shifting toward jazz during his teenage years. His formal jazz training took place first at Berklee School of Music in Boston and afterward at the New School in New York City, where the multi-instrumentalist—whose family heritage is Croatian and German—also began investigating a range of other ethnic musical styles. Weaving those influences into his jazz-based compositions set Derado apart from fellow musicians, and his distinctive style soon drew the attention of established performers. After college he collaborated with artists such as Craig Handy, Jimmy Cliff, Dave Liebman, and Orlando Marin y Su Orchestra while also touring internationally. In 2003 Derado issued his first CD, Luminescence.
